Sustainable Love—Tree planting on Chinese Valentine's Day

12 Feb, 2006--The Conservancy Association organised the first ever tree planting activity on a restored landfill on Lantern Festival. About 50 couples, together with their families and friends, planted 300 Hong Kong Hawthorn, also known as "harbingers of spring" in Chinese.

According to the Statistics and Census Department, Hong Kong imported HK$163,000,000 worth of cut flowers in 2005. In Hong Kong, landfill is the final destination for all these flowers.

By choosing a restored landfill as the site for tree planting, we hoped that the people in Hong Kong would be aware of how serious the waste problem is.

Tseung Kwan O Stage I Landfill, where the activity was held, has an area of 62 hectares. It is as large as 4.7 Victoria Park put together. The landfill is just one of the 13 restored landfills, with a total area of 288 hectares. The three operating strategic landfills have a total area of 178 hectares. All the 16 landfills is span an area of 27 Victoria Parks! The time ended to restore a landfillis at least 30 years.
