Tree Caring Problem in Paterson Street

The Highways Department has planted nine Elaeocarpus apiculatus trees, exotic species, at the pedestrianized area in Paterson Street near Hang Lung Centre. The landscape architect from the Department claimed that Elaeocarpus apiculatus has a tower-shaped appearance, with layers of white tassels during flowering. They were later handed over to the Leisure and Cultural Department for maintenance. However, CA noticed during the recent visit that the work at Hang Lung Centre seriously affected the adjacent trees.

CA has long kept track on the tree maintenance work of this greening project. The trees remained luxuriant status in 2007, but lacking proper maintenance and conservation, the trunk base suffered from frequent crashes by loadings and hawkers’ handcarts. The scene of chlorotic leaves and mosses at trunk base emerged last year, while some trees were replaced due to health problem. During recent renovation work at Hang Fung Centre, their conditions deteriorated after large-scale pruning. The construction hoardings did not only constrain the growth of the tree crowns but also tree roots.

It was after follow-up and complaints that the hoardings were removed.
The Administration promised a better urban greening work in these recent years, but often neglect proper tree care afterwards and then waste massive resources on replanting trees. The tree problem in Paterson Street reflected that the Administration still repeated the same mistake. CA reiterated that the Administration should work hard on tree conservation and maintenance work after greening project.
