The Fate of Hoo Hok Wai and Long Valley

Other Specified Use (OU) is probably a new magic trick. Its bracket behind would inadvertently conjure up many possibilities and elaborations. In the previous consultations on Frontier Closed Area (FCA) and North East New Territories New Development Areas, OU demonstrated its super magic power by transforming Hoo Hok Wai (HHW) and Long Valley (LV) into an area catering not only for wetland but also low density development. However, would you be deceived......(more)

Walk for the Environment 2010

“Walk for the environment” is the core fund-raising activity of CA every year. From the 70’s to now, the Walk aims to raise fund for CA’s environmental education projects, and meanwhile provide an opportunity for the public to get closer to the nature and be more aware of environmental protection. This year the Walk will be held on 11th April, with starting point at Tung Chung and ending point at Mui Wo. Along the route will be a series of “Information Checkpoints”, where guides will present to the participants the ecological and historical highlights. All participants can experience a genuine “green journey”.

Details and enrollment method of the Walk will be uploaded to CA’s website in February. Please pay attention to the updates!

There are now 506 registered “Old and Valuable Trees” (OVTs) in Hong Kong. In comparing with other trees, OVTs are treated in a very different manner. Apart from having tree assessments at least twice a year, they are closely monitored by staff and volunteers. Theoretically they should be strong, healthy and long-living. However back in 2007, there were 527 OVTs registered. An obvious drop is observed when compared with the current figure. Did the tree management go wrong, or are the OVTs reaching their limits......(more)
